Keonjhar Police Arrest Man for Rape of Differently-Abled Tribal Minor
In a significant development, Keonjhar police on Thursday arrested a 28-year-old man for the alleged rape of a differently-abled minor tribal girl. The arrest follows a police complaint lodged on April 6 regarding the rape and a subsequent violent group clash that erupted in the community.
Details of the Alleged Crime and Investigation
According to police reports, the incident took place approximately four months ago. The accused, who is a relative of the survivor, had reportedly converted to another religion several years prior and was working in Tamil Nadu at the time. The case came to light when the girl fell ill and was taken to a hospital on Saturday, where family members discovered she was pregnant.
Upon learning that the pregnancy resulted from a man belonging to another community, unrest quickly spread among villagers. This revelation triggered immediate outrage and led to a series of confrontations.
Community Unrest and Police Intervention
On Sunday, a group of villagers allegedly vandalized a house belonging to the accused as well as a local religious place. The protesters demanded the immediate arrest of the accused, leading to heightened tensions in the area.
In response to the escalating situation, police forces were swiftly deployed to the village to prevent further violence. Authorities, along with local administration officials, formed a peace committee to restore order and bring the volatile situation under control.
Legal Proceedings and Custody
SDPO (Anandpur) Kamal Panda confirmed that the court sent the accused to judicial custody on Thursday following his arrest. The police have emphasized their commitment to a thorough investigation while maintaining peace in the community.
This case highlights the complex interplay of social, religious, and legal issues in tribal regions, underscoring the challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing such sensitive matters while ensuring communal harmony.
