Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau Nabs Junior Engineer in Bribery Sting Operation

In a significant crackdown on corruption, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has apprehended a 29-year-old junior engineer from the Public Works Department in Maharashtra's Raigad district. The arrest was made on Monday after the official was allegedly caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh from a contractor.

Details of the Corruption Case

The case revolves around construction work completed by a contractor for roadside drain slabs at multiple locations including Murud-Ekdara, Rajapuri, and Khokhri during 2024. Following project completion, the contractor approached the department seeking clearance of his final payment.

According to police officials, the accused engineer, identified as Shraddha D. Borhade, initially demanded Rs 3 lakh to process the payment. After negotiations between the parties, the amount was reportedly reduced to Rs 2.5 lakh.

ACB's Trap Operation

Deputy Superintendent of Police Sarita I. S. Bhosale of ACB Raigad detailed how the contractor, frustrated by the illegal demand, filed a formal complaint with the Anti-Corruption Bureau. Acting swiftly on the complaint, ACB officials set up a carefully planned trap operation.

On Monday, Borhade was apprehended at her office while allegedly accepting the negotiated bribe amount. The arrest was executed during the transaction, providing concrete evidence for the corruption charges.

Legal Proceedings and Charges

The junior engineer has been formally booked under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. This legislation provides stringent penalties for public officials involved in corrupt practices, including demanding or accepting bribes for official duties.

This arrest highlights the ongoing efforts by Maharashtra's Anti-Corruption Bureau to combat corruption within government departments. The Public Works Department, responsible for significant infrastructure projects across the state, has faced previous scrutiny regarding transparency in contract processes and payment approvals.

The case underscores the challenges contractors often face when dealing with government departments for legitimate payments. It also demonstrates the importance of whistleblower mechanisms and anti-corruption agencies in maintaining accountability within public administration systems.

Officials have emphasized that such actions send a strong message against corruption in public office. The investigation continues as authorities examine whether this was an isolated incident or part of a broader pattern within the department.
