Major Drug Bust in Ludhiana: Police Seize 3,100 kg Poppy Husk After Fierce Encounter

In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Jamalpur police under the Ludhiana Commissionerate have confiscated a massive haul of over 3,100 kilograms of illegal poppy husk. The seizure followed a dramatic confrontation with smugglers in Khaira Bet village, where the accused opened fire on police personnel in a desperate bid to escape.

Dramatic Shootout Unfolds During Police Operation

According to official reports, the police team, acting on a credible tip-off, intercepted the smugglers while they were in the process of unloading the illicit consignment. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rural) Jaskiranjit Singh Teja detailed that the operation was launched based on intelligence indicating a large-scale drug smuggling operation from other states into Ludhiana.

The police reached Humbran Road near the Phagla village bus stop, where they observed approximately 10 to 12 individuals transferring sacks from a truck to other vehicles. Upon spotting the police, the accused attempted to flee the scene, leading to a high-speed chase.

In a dangerous escalation, two of the smugglers traveling in a Mahindra Scorpio fired at least four rounds at the pursuing police officers. The police retaliated by firing back, although fortunately, no injuries were reported from either side during the exchange of gunfire.

Smugglers Escape After Vehicle Crash

During the chaotic pursuit, the accused lost control of their SUV, which crashed into the wall of a gurdwara in Khehra Bet village. Despite this accident, the smugglers managed to abandon their vehicles and escape on foot before the police could apprehend them. The authorities have launched a manhunt to identify and capture the individuals involved in this brazen attack and drug trafficking operation.

Massive Haul and Seized Vehicles

The police recovered a total of 155 bags filled with poppy husk, with the total weight exceeding 3,100 kilograms. Out of these, 120 sacks were found inside the truck, while the remaining were discovered in the other vehicles left behind at the scene. In addition to the narcotics, law enforcement officials seized a truck, a mini truck, and three SUVs from the location.

It is alleged that the accused were in the midst of transferring the poppy husk from the truck to the other vehicles for further distribution when the police intervention occurred. The swift action by the Jamalpur police prevented a substantial quantity of drugs from reaching the streets.

Legal Action Initiated Against Unidentified Accused

An FIR has been registered against unidentified drug peddlers under various sections of the Arms Act, as well as Section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The police are intensifying their efforts to trace the suspects and dismantle the smuggling network responsible for this large-scale illegal activity.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in combating drug trafficking in the region. The Ludhiana police have reaffirmed their commitment to eradicating the narcotics trade and ensuring public safety through proactive measures and intelligence-driven operations.
