According to the prosecution's account, the complainant, Mukul Jaiswal from Daad village, was an electrical engineering student in Patiala at the time. Jaiswal had traveled to Delhi for a job interview on September 29, 2019. In the early hours of October 1, 2019, at approximately 2 am, he disembarked from a train at Ludhiana railway station.
While waiting for an auto-rickshaw, a Swift car stopped near him. The driver, who identified himself as Ranjit Singh Sunna of Lamma Jatpura village, currently residing in Barewal, inquired about Jaiswal's destination. Initially hesitant to accept a lift from a stranger, Jaiswal relented after the driver provided his details, believing the account to be genuine.
As they approached a mall on Ferozepur Road, the driver suddenly snatched Jaiswal's mobile phone, leading to a physical altercation. The accused punched Jaiswal in the face and attempted to forcibly seize his bag, even dragging the complainant alongside the moving vehicle during the struggle. After snatching Rs 2,700 from Jaiswal's shirt pocket, the accused pushed him out of the car.
Passersby quickly arranged an ambulance for Jaiswal, who had sustained multiple facial and bodily injuries. He received initial treatment at a civil hospital before being referred to DMC Hospital, from where he was eventually discharged.
