The Lucknow Traffic Police has announced a 30-day awareness campaign starting May 4 to ensure the universal installation of High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on vehicles across the city. The initiative aims to educate vehicle owners about the importance of HSRP, the online application process, timelines, and associated legal provisions.
Purpose of the Campaign
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Raveena Tyagi stated that the campaign is a response to persistent non-compliance, as many vehicles still operate without standardized number plates, hindering identification and enforcement. She emphasized that HSRP-equipped vehicles enhance traceability, enabling quicker detection in criminal cases, better monitoring through surveillance systems, and more effective traffic regulation.
Key Benefits Highlighted
Tyagi noted that accurate vehicle identification is critical for crime detection, road discipline, and public safety, particularly in cases involving crimes against women. HSRP plays a central role in this ecosystem. She clarified that while enforcement during the awareness phase will be minimal, this should not be misconstrued as an exemption. Legal action can still be initiated where necessary.
Enforcement Phase from June 1
Starting June 1, the traffic police will launch an enforcement drive with strict penalties. Violators may face challans ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000, and authorized officers will have the power to detain or seize non-compliant vehicles.
Additional Information
The campaign will include public announcements, social media posts, and on-ground activities to reach vehicle owners. The traffic police urge all vehicle owners to comply with the HSRP mandate to avoid penalties and contribute to safer roads.
