In a shocking incident that has sent ripples through the community, a 70-year-old woman was found brutally murdered at her residence in Vattathara, Chavara, Kollam on Sunday. The Kollam Police have swiftly taken her 28-year-old grandson, identified as Shahanas, into custody in connection with the gruesome crime.
Gruesome Discovery and Immediate Arrest
The victim, identified as Sulekha Beevi, was discovered in a horrific state. Police officials reported that her head had been severed and was found placed inside a cover, which was hidden underneath a bed at the crime scene. The brutality of the act pointed to a deeply personal and violent motive. Acting on evidence and preliminary investigation, the Chavara Police moved quickly and detained the victim's grandson, Shahanas, who is now the prime accused in the case.
Motive and Accused's Criminal Background
Initial investigations by the police point to a disturbing motive behind the murder. It is suspected that Shahanas was allegedly enraged over not being given his grandmother's pension money. This financial dispute is believed to have triggered the extreme violence. Further deepening the tragedy is the accused's troubled background. Police sources confirm that Shahanas is a habitual offender, with several cases already registered against him, primarily related to drug use and possession.
Officers revealed that he has been addicted to narcotics for a considerable time, and this addiction frequently manifested in violent behaviour within the household. The combination of substance abuse and the alleged financial grievance appears to have culminated in this heinous act.
Family Trauma and Ongoing Investigation
The aftermath of the murder has plunged the family into further trauma. In a tragic turn of events, Shahanas's mother, Mumtaz, who is also a witness to the gruesome incident, reportedly attempted suicide shortly after the murder was discovered. She has been hospitalized and is currently under medical observation, adding another layer of sorrow to the case.
The Chavara Police have registered a formal murder case, and a detailed probe is now underway. As part of the investigation, Shahanas will undergo a medical examination and further interrogation. Forensic experts have been summoned to the scene to meticulously collect and analyse evidence that could be crucial for the case. The police are committed to a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.
