Kolkata Trader Brutally Assaulted and Robbed on Busy EM Bypass
A shocking incident of assault and robbery has been reported from Kolkata's Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, where a 26-year-old trader was allegedly attacked by bike-borne youths and robbed of his gold chain. The victim, identified as Sheikh Sahil, a resident of Annapura Enclave in South Roy Nagar, Bansdroni, was waiting to meet a friend near the Singhabari junction when the attack occurred on Sunday night, January 25.
Violent Attack on Busy Commercial Stretch
According to the complaint filed by Sahil, he was standing near a commercial area close to Singhabari junction around 9:30 pm when two to three youths on a motorcycle approached him. The assailants allegedly questioned him about why he was standing at the spot and inquired about his origins. When Sahil tried to explain that he was waiting for someone, the situation quickly escalated into violence.
The attackers reportedly began assaulting him with sticks and struck him with a heavy object, causing him to fall to the ground. During the brutal attack, one of the assailants displayed a knife and even 'stabbed' him before snatching his gold chain and fleeing the scene. Sahil claimed that despite shouting for help, no passers-by intervened during the assault.
Police Investigation Underway
Following the incident, Sahil sought medical treatment at the state-run Baghajatin Hospital in Jadavpur area before approaching Survey Park Police Station to file a formal complaint. Police have registered a case and initiated a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
Investigators noted that the location where the attack occurred is typically busy during evening hours, raising questions about why no one came to Sahil's assistance. Officers are examining whether the assault took place in a less visible pocket of the roadway or during a brief lull in traffic.
Multiple Angles Being Probed
The police investigation is progressing along several fronts:
- Collection of medical documents and recording of the victim's detailed statement
- Review of CCTV footage from multiple sources including:
- Traffic signal camera at Singhabari junction
- Camera installed near a mall in the vicinity
- Probing possible motives including:
- Old rivalry connections
- Involvement of hired attackers
- Potential links to the friend Sahil was supposed to meet
Police officials stated that the motive behind the attack remains unclear at present, and they are exploring all possible angles to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. The case highlights concerns about safety on busy thoroughfares even in well-trafficked areas of the city.
