Kolkata Police Nab Two Accused in Separate Rape Cases Linked to False Marriage Promises
In a significant crackdown, the Anandapur police in Kolkata made two arrests on Wednesday in connection with separate cases of rape. The arrests stem from allegations where two women were reportedly sexually exploited after being lured with promises of marriage.
First Case: Social Media Deception Leads to Hotel Assault
According to police reports, the first case was registered on January 1. A 20-year-old woman came forward with a complaint against Md Taslim, a 22-year-old resident of Tiljala Shibtala Lane. The victim alleged that Taslim initially befriended her on social media platforms, where he gained her trust by repeatedly promising to marry her.
Exploiting this trust, the accused allegedly sexually assaulted the woman multiple times between 7:30 PM on December 28 and noon on December 30, 2025. These incidents are said to have occurred at a hotel located in Uttar Panchanna Gram. Following the registration of the case, Taslim went into hiding but was eventually apprehended by police around 2:05 AM.
Second Case: Dating App Connection Results in Prolonged Exploitation
The second arrest involved a case registered on January 11, where a 38-year-old woman accused Sadiqe Hossain of sexual exploitation. According to the complaint, Hossain connected with the victim through a dating application and similarly promised marriage to establish a relationship.
The woman stated that between 2024 and 2026, the accused engaged in sexual intercourse with her on multiple occasions under the pretext of their impending marriage. She further alleged that Hossain subjected her to verbal abuse using filthy language during their interactions. All alleged incidents in this case reportedly took place at the complainant's residence. Like the first accused, Hossain was also evading authorities before being captured by police at 1:35 AM.
Police Investigation and Legal Proceedings
Anandapur police officials confirmed that both accused individuals were apprehended after thorough investigation and tracking efforts. The cases highlight concerning patterns of exploitation through digital platforms where perpetrators use false promises of marriage to manipulate victims.
Authorities have emphasized that such cases are being treated with utmost seriousness, and investigations are ongoing to ensure justice for the victims. The police have urged citizens to exercise caution when forming relationships through online platforms and to report any suspicious behavior immediately.
Legal experts note that these cases fall under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code dealing with rape and sexual assault, particularly when consent is obtained through false promises. The arrests demonstrate Kolkata police's commitment to addressing gender-based violence in the city.
