Kolhapur: In two separate incidents, the Kolhapur forest department along with nature enthusiasts successfully rescued a peacock from a water well and a jungle cat that was hit by a four-wheeler.
Peacock Rescued from Deep Well
Nilesh Gharse, a bird enthusiast from the Nisargpremi Mitra Mandal, learned that a peacock had fallen into a 50-foot-deep well in Wathar village of Hatkanangale taluka on Thursday. He promptly contacted the 'sarpmitra' rescue team to reach the location. The team descended into the well and successfully rescued the peacock. After a medical checkup, the bird was released into its natural surroundings on Friday. The rescue operation was conducted under the supervision of forest guard Pradeep Joshi. Officials suspect that the peacock may have fallen into the well while being chased by stray dogs.
Jungle Cat Saved After Vehicle Accident
In a separate case, an injured jungle cat was saved after being struck by a vehicle near Ispurli village. Range forest officer Nandkumar Nalawade of the Karvir forest range said, 'Last week, animal lover Jitendra Potdar was traveling towards Kolhapur for work. While passing near Ispurli village, he spotted an injured jungle cat by the road. He immediately shared a photo of the injured animal on the Radhanagari Wildlife Group to alert others about the situation. He stayed at the spot until the Karvir Forest Department’s rescue team arrived. The rescue team reached the site in time, safely secured the wild cat, and initiated treatment.'
Over the following days, the wild cat received medical care and observation under a wildlife veterinary officer. 'Once its wounds were fully healed and it was confirmed to be ready to roam in the wild, the cat was released on Friday at the location where it had been rescued. Upon its release, the wild cat immediately darted towards its natural habitat,' Nalawade added.
