KGMU Doctor's Parents Held in Lucknow for Alleged Forcible Conversion, Son on Run
KGMU doctor's parents arrested for alleged conversion in Lucknow

In a significant development, Lucknow Police on Monday, January 6, 2026, arrested the parents of a fugitive resident doctor from King George's Medical University (KGMU) in connection with a case of alleged forcible religious conversion and coercion. The arrests followed detailed statements from two women who accused the family of pressuring them to convert for marriage.

Parents Taken Into Custody After Magistrate Statements

The police took into custody Salimuddin (70) and Khadija (60), parents of the accused doctor identified as Rameezuddin. The couple was residing in a rented house in Lucknow's Old City area. Deputy Commissioner of Police Vishwajeet Srivastava stated that the arrests were made after the statements of both alleged victims were formally recorded before a magistrate.

According to the police, the case involves two separate but connected allegations. One relates to the alleged conversion of a resident doctor from Agra Medical College for the purpose of marriage. The second involves an attempt to pressure another resident doctor at KGMU to convert so she could marry their son, Rameezuddin.

Doctor on the Run, Reward Doubled to Rs 50,000

The central accused, Dr. Rameezuddin, remains at large. The police have intensified their search and have doubled the reward for information leading to his arrest from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000. A non-bailable warrant has been obtained against him, and police teams have been dispatched to various locations to trace him.

In a move to pressure the fugitive, authorities have also decided to approach the court seeking directions to attach his property. Raids have already been conducted at his house in Uttarakhand and his ancestral home in Pilibhit, but his whereabouts are still unknown.

DCP Srivastava elaborated on the charges, stating, "Rameezuddin faces charges of sexual exploitation of the two victims besides conversion and forcible miscarriage charges." The KGMU had previously suspended the doctor after a complaint was lodged by a colleague on December 23.

New Names Emerge, Investigation Widens

During the questioning of the arrested parents, the police said the names of a Muslim cleric, who allegedly solemnised the nikah (marriage), and a witness have come to light. Investigators will now verify their roles to ascertain if they should be added as accused in the case.

The police have booked the accused under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections:

  • Section 69 (sexual intercourse by employing deceitful means)
  • Section 89 (causing miscarriage without woman’s consent)
  • Section 351 (criminal intimidation)
  • Alongside charges related to religious conversion.

The complaint from the KGMU doctor revealed that she came in contact with another woman who identified herself as Rameezuddin's wife. This woman reportedly disclosed that she had converted for the marriage, which was solemnised in February of the previous year.

The case continues to unfold as police pursue the main accused and investigate the broader network allegedly involved in the incidents of coercion and conversion.
