Kerala Youth Apprehended for Damaging Vande Bharat Express in Angamaly
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has taken into custody an 18-year-old individual from Kerala on allegations of hurling stones at the prestigious Vande Bharat Express. The incident, which resulted in significant damage to the train, occurred on the evening of March 7 near Angamaly.
Details of the Arrest and Incident
The accused has been identified as Sujith Suresh, a resident of Akaparamb in close proximity to Angamaly. Authorities reported that the stone-pelting episode caused the shattering of two windowpanes on the Vande Bharat Express. The damage was discovered only when the train arrived at its destination in Mangalapuram, prompting an immediate investigation.
Upon reviewing the CCTV footage installed on the exterior of the train, the guard promptly filed an official complaint with the RPF stationed in Aluva. The surveillance visuals played a crucial role in identifying and subsequently locating Sujith Suresh, leading to his arrest on Thursday.
Motivation Behind the Destructive Act
According to statements released by the RPF, the young man confessed to pelting stones at the train as an outlet for his frustration. This emotional turmoil stemmed from his girlfriend ending their relationship, which drove him to commit the act of vandalism.
Legal Proceedings and Current Status
Sujith Suresh was presented before the Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate, who ordered his remand into judicial custody. Given that stone pelting at trains is classified as a non-bailable offence under Indian law, he has been transferred to a borstal school in Thrikkakara. Borstal schools serve as rehabilitative detention centres specifically designed for young offenders, focusing on reform and education.
The case has been formally registered under Section 153 of the Railways Act, which addresses acts of mischief that endanger the safety of persons traveling by railway. This section carries stringent penalties to deter such dangerous behaviors that compromise public safety and railway property.
The RPF has emphasized the seriousness of this offence, highlighting the potential risks to passengers and railway staff. Incidents of stone pelting can lead to severe injuries, fatalities, and substantial financial losses due to damage to high-value assets like the Vande Bharat Express.
