Acupuncturist Arrested in Kerala Over Wife's Tragic Death After Childbirth

Police in Thrissur, Kerala, made a significant arrest on Saturday, taking into custody an acupuncturist in connection with the death of his wife, who succumbed to complications following childbirth at their residence in Edakkazhiyur near Chavakkad.

Details of the Arrest and Allegations

Kalluvalappil Ibrahim, aged 43, was apprehended by Chavakkad Station House Officer Rajeev N S. The arrest followed a complaint from the woman's family, who alleged that Ibrahim had denied his wife, Muhsina (37), necessary medical treatment during and after her pregnancy.

Forensic Findings and Cause of Death

The forensic team, led by police surgeon Dr. T S Hitesh Shankar, conducted a postmortem examination on Muhsina. Their report informed the police that her death was caused by an infection resulting from inadequate medical care provided during pregnancy and after delivery.

Muhsina passed away on Thursday, following her seventh delivery on January 10. Tragically, the newborn baby also died within four days of birth. This adds to the family's grief, as two of their other children had died earlier.

Complaint and Social Activist Involvement

Social activist Palakkal Hamsath Muhammed, a native of Puthuponnani, filed a formal complaint with the Chavakkad police. He alleged that the baby's death occurred due to a lack of medical treatment.

Muhsina was admitted to a medical college hospital where she died from septicaemia, a severe bloodstream infection triggered by the postpartum infection.

Broader Implications and Community Response

This incident has sparked outrage in the local community, raising concerns about medical negligence and the importance of proper healthcare access, especially for women during childbirth. Authorities are continuing their investigation to ensure justice is served.
