Kargil War Veteran's Tragic End: Family Murder-Suicide Shocks Kanpur
A horrific family tragedy unfolded in Kanpur when a 51-year-old Kargil war veteran allegedly shot his wife and 16-year-old son before taking his own life. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community and raised serious questions about the pressures faced by retired military personnel.
Gruesome Discovery at Family Home
The grim sequence of events began unfolding on Monday morning when police received information about a man being run over by a freight train near the Kathogar-Imlipur railway underpass in Tulsiyapur village. Upon investigation, authorities identified the deceased as retired soldier Chetram Paswan (51) with the help of his Aadhaar card and motorcycle found near the railway tracks.
When police officers visited Paswan's residence in the Sen Pashchim Para police station area to inform his family, they made a chilling discovery. The doors were open, and inside they found the bodies of Paswan's wife Sunita Verma (40) and their son Deep (16) lying on the floor. A double-barrel licensed gun was found nearby, suggesting the weapon used in the crime.
Police Investigation Reveals Disturbing Details
Joint Commissioner of Police Vipin Tada confirmed that forensic evidence indicates Sunita was shot in the head while her son Deep suffered a chest wound. Investigators believe Sunita was shot first, and when Deep rushed into the room to save his mother, he too was fatally shot.
The forensic team collected crucial evidence from the scene, including the weapon and a mobile phone found at the location. According to preliminary investigations, neighbors reported hearing the couple arguing on Sunday night, suggesting domestic tensions preceded the tragedy.
Family Disputes and Financial Pressures
Chetram Paswan, originally from Serua Bakhariya village of Ghatampur, had married Sunita from Palhenpur village 25 years ago. After retiring from the Army, he worked as a security guard at a bank in Bada Chauraha. The family had recently moved into their newly constructed house in Tulsiyapur just four months prior to the incident.
Sources reveal that Paswan had taken a loan of approximately Rs 12 lakh for both the house construction and his daughter's wedding, which occurred six months earlier. Financial pressures reportedly mounted as he struggled to repay the debt. Two months before the tragedy, he had asked his father, Ayodhya Prasad, for his share of family land. A month later, his father sold a field and provided him with Rs 12 lakh, which Paswan used to clear the loan.
Conflicting Theories and Family Reactions
While initial investigations point toward a murder-suicide, Paswan's brother Babu Ram has raised doubts, alleging it might be a case of murder. He pointed to the unusual detail of a rope being tied around Deep's waist and argued that his brother had no reason to end his life since he had recently repaid his substantial debt.
Sunita's sister, Asha Devi, arrived at the scene but declined to comment on the tragedy. The couple's daughter, who married six months earlier, and their son, a Class IX student, complete the picture of a family that appeared to be rebuilding their lives before this devastating turn of events.
