Gurdaspur Police Attack Investigation Remains Shrouded in Secrecy
Three days after a deadly shooting claimed the lives of two police personnel at a border post in Gurdaspur, Punjab Police officials have maintained a tight-lipped stance regarding the progress of their investigation. The incident occurred at a police chowki in Adhian village, located barely one kilometer from the Pakistan border, on Saturday night.
Victims and Initial Claims
Assistant Sub-Inspector Gurnam Singh and Homeguard Ashok Kumar were fatally shot during the attack. Initial responsibility was claimed by a group identifying itself as Tehreek-e-Taliban Hindustan (TTH). However, by Monday, gangsters operating from both Pakistan and India began asserting their involvement in the assault, adding layers of complexity to the case.
Investigation Progress and Challenges
Police sources have indicated that investigators have made significant strides and may soon identify the perpetrators. A senior officer revealed that the probe is being examined from multiple angles, including potential smuggling connections, cross-border terrorism involvement, and personal enmity. Despite these efforts, no conclusive version of events has emerged thus far.
When approached for comment, Senior Superintendent of Police Aditya confirmed that the investigation is ongoing but declined to share specific details, maintaining the department's cautious approach.
Final Rites and Community Response
The last rites for ASI Gurnam Singh were conducted at his native village of Gadarian on Tuesday, with senior Punjab Police officers in attendance to support the grieving family. The mortal remains of Ashok Kumar were cremated at his native village on Monday.
Senior officials, including Special DGP Arpit Shukla, participated in carrying the bier during the ceremonies. Hundreds of villagers gathered to pay their final respects to the officers who lost their lives while performing their duty.
Emerging Evidence and Political Attention
CCTV footage that surfaced on Sunday captured images of suspects fleeing the scene on a motorcycle. Additionally, another video purportedly featuring Indian and Pakistan-based gangsters emerged, in which they issued warnings to rivals and mocked police authorities.
Former Deputy Chief Minister and Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa visited several police stations late on Tuesday night. He reported that the road leading to the Dera Baba Nanak police station was obstructed with barricades, highlighting ongoing security concerns in the region.
The investigation continues as authorities work to unravel the multiple claims and evidence surrounding this tragic border incident.
