Kanpur Woman Files Police Complaint Against Husband and In-Laws for Dowry Harassment and Assault
A 25-year-old woman in Kanpur has filed a formal police complaint alleging severe domestic violence and dowry harassment perpetrated by her husband and his family members. The shocking case, registered by the Panki police station on Thursday, details a series of alleged abuses spanning over a year.
Allegations of Violence on Wedding Night and Beyond
In her detailed written complaint to the authorities, the woman stated that her marriage to a resident of Naramau took place on February 3, 2025. She alleges that on their very first night together, when she refused physical relations due to menstruation, her husband responded with violence.
"My husband beat me and forced himself on me," the complaint reads, describing the traumatic initiation to her marital life. This incident, according to her account, was merely the beginning of a prolonged ordeal.
Escalation to Dowry Demands and Threats
The situation reportedly deteriorated rapidly from the following day. The woman claims her husband, along with her brother-in-law and mother-in-law, began harassing her for additional dowry. The demands allegedly included pressuring her to get a plot of land registered in her husband's name.
"When I protested against these unlawful demands, my husband beat me repeatedly and threatened to kill me," she alleged in her statement to the police. The harassment culminated on June 4, 2025, when she claims she was forcibly thrown out of her marital home.
Continued Harassment and Public Assault
The complainant's troubles did not end with her expulsion. She further alleges that on March 8, 2026, her husband located her at Kalyanpur railway station where he verbally abused and physically assaulted her in public. In a particularly alarming development, she states that the day after she initially filed her complaint, two unidentified individuals approached her and issued death threats.
Police Action and Investigation Underway
Taking cognizance of the serious allegations, the Panki police have registered a formal case against five individuals, including the husband, brother-in-law, and mother-in-law. Police Sub-Inspector Manoj Singh Bhadauriya, the Station House Officer, confirmed the registration of the case based on the victim's detailed written complaint.
"The matter is currently under active investigation. Our teams are questioning both parties involved to ascertain the complete facts of the case," SHO Bhadauriya stated, emphasizing that due legal process is being followed.
This case highlights the persistent issues of domestic violence and dowry-related crimes in the region, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of laws protecting women from such atrocities. The police investigation is ongoing to verify the allegations and ensure appropriate legal action is taken.
