A tragic hit-and-run incident in Kanpur on Monday afternoon claimed the life of an elderly woman and left her husband seriously injured. The couple was returning home on their scooter when a speeding truck rammed into them from behind.
Details of the Sisamau Hit-and-Run
The victims have been identified as Naresh Sonkar, a tailor from Lajpat Nagar Narayanpurwa, and his 62-year-old wife, Anguridevi. The couple had gone shopping at Sisamau market and were on their way back home. The accident occurred on GT Road near the Sisamau ACP office.
According to reports, a truck coming from behind at high speed hit their scooter. The impact caused Anguridevi to fall onto the road. In a horrific turn, the truck, while attempting to flee, ran over her, leading to her instantaneous death. Naresh Sonkar sustained serious injuries in the collision.
Police Action and Traffic Violation
After the accident, local police, with assistance from passersby, managed to intercept and seize the abandoned truck. However, the accused driver had already fled the scene.
Sisamau police station in-charge Rakesh Kumar Singh confirmed that a search operation is underway to apprehend the driver. A critical detail emerging from the investigation is that the truck was traveling through a no-entry zone at the time of the accident. Shockingly, the vehicle possessed a valid pass issued by the traffic police, raising questions about enforcement.
Aftermath and Family
The family of the deceased is in a state of profound grief. Naresh Sonkar and Anguridevi are survived by their two married daughters, Jyoti and Deepa. The incident has once again highlighted the deadly menace of speeding and reckless driving on Kanpur's roads, especially violations in restricted zones.
This tragedy underscores the urgent need for stricter monitoring of commercial vehicles and better enforcement of traffic rules to prevent such senseless loss of life.
