Temple Renovation Dispute Escalates into Violent Clash in Kanpur Village
A long-standing dispute over the renovation of a temple constructed on Gram Samaj land in Sen Paschim Para Pipargawan village, located within Kanpur district, erupted into severe violence on Saturday evening. The confrontation resulted in several individuals sustaining serious injuries, including one woman whose condition was reported as critical.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Violence
The conflict originated when Kinnar Basanti, a resident of Pipargawan village, initiated renovation work on the temple situated on Gram Samaj land. This action was strongly opposed by neighbors Veer Singh, Dheer Singh, and Raghunath, sparking a dispute that persisted for several days. Upon receiving information about the escalating tension, local police personnel intervened and escorted both parties to Kuriya Chauki police outpost, where a temporary settlement was reportedly brokered.
However, the situation deteriorated rapidly afterward. Kinnar Basanti alleged that while returning home from the chauki with family members, they were ambushed by Veer Singh, Dheer Singh, Raghunath, Lakhan Singh, and their associates. The attackers reportedly used sticks and batons in a violent assault.
Injuries and Police Response
The attack left multiple individuals with serious injuries, including Radha, Monu, Lakshmi, Ramkishore, Kajal, and Jashwant. All injured parties were promptly admitted to the Community Health Center (CHC) in Bidhnu for medical treatment. Due to the critical nature of Radha's injuries, attending doctors referred her to the district hospital for advanced care.
Victims have alleged that the assault occurred in plain view of police personnel, yet law enforcement was unable to prevent the violence. In response to a written complaint filed by the victim's side, Station In-charge Pradeep Kumar Singh confirmed that a formal case has been registered under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those pertaining to rioting and assault. Two accused individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Station In-charge Pradeep Kumar Singh stated, "Both sides involved in this dispute belong to the same extended family. Based on the written complaint submitted by the victim side, we have registered a case under several sections including rioting and assault, and have arrested two accused persons. The investigation is ongoing."
The incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding land use and religious structures in rural areas, with local authorities now working to maintain order and pursue legal action against those responsible for the violence.
