Kanpur Police Arrest Man for Impersonating Officer in Elaborate Job Scam
Police in Kanpur have made a significant arrest in a case involving a man who allegedly duped numerous individuals by posing as a police officer and promising them jobs. The arrest, which took place on Wednesday, led to the recovery of a car, a fake pistol, cartridges, two mobile phones, silver and gold rings, an ID card, and a police uniform from the accused.
Details of the Arrest and Recovery
According to DCP (Central) Atul Kumar Srivastava, the Anwarganj police apprehended Sanjay Kumar Singh, a resident of Dosti Nagar in Unnao, on Kalpi Road. At the time of his arrest, Singh was wearing a sub-inspector's uniform, despite having no legitimate authority to do so. During a subsequent search, authorities discovered a fake police ID card and a counterfeit CBI ID card in his possession.
The investigation revealed that Singh, along with his associates Durgesh Kumar Savita and Vijay Singh Chauhan, orchestrated a sophisticated job scam. Savita, who was previously dismissed from service, and Chauhan are currently absconding. The trio allegedly rented private schools and hotels in Lucknow, where they conducted fake examinations and interviews for job aspirants.
Modus Operandi of the Scam
The accused would assure candidates of employment and collect money from them under false pretenses. After receiving payments, they would delay the process by citing pending results as an excuse. When victims grew suspicious and demanded refunds, the accused resorted to intimidation tactics, threatening them by flaunting police uniforms and using a fake lighter pistol to instill fear.
In a bizarre twist, the car recovered from Singh was found fitted with a number plate bearing the designation of the joint commissioner of the Income Tax Department in Lucknow, adding another layer of deception to their scheme.
Ongoing Investigation and Manhunt
DCP Srivastava confirmed that raids are currently underway to trace and arrest the two absconding accused, Durgesh Kumar Savita and Vijay Singh Chauhan. Further investigation is in progress to uncover the full extent of the scam and identify any additional victims or accomplices.
This case highlights the growing issue of job-related frauds in the region and serves as a warning to job seekers to verify the credentials of recruiters thoroughly. Police have urged the public to report any similar incidents to prevent such scams in the future.
