In a shocking repeat of violence, an engineer in Kanpur stands accused of murdering his two-month pregnant wife. The gruesome crime occurred in the F-Block area under the Gujaini police station jurisdiction on Saturday, revealing a harrowing history of domestic abuse and a prior homicide conviction.
A History of Violence and a New Tragedy
The victim, identified as Roshni, a resident of Akbarpur Jhabaiya village, had married the accused, Sanjay Kumar, in December 2024. According to her uncle, Keshnarayan, Sanjay worked as an engineer in a metal company. The marriage was reportedly marred by frequent assaults. The situation escalated dangerously on November 21, when Sanjay allegedly attempted to set Roshni on fire. Following this horrific incident, a dowry case was registered against him, after which he went absconding.
Discovery of the Crime
The crime came to light when Roshni's nephew visited her home on Saturday and found the door locked from outside. Growing suspicious, the family immediately alerted the police. Officers forced their way into the house and made the grim discovery of Roshni's body. She was two months pregnant at the time of her death.
A Repeat Offender with a Criminal Past
Speaking on the case, DCP South Deependra Nath Chaudhary revealed the accused's disturbing criminal background. The family described Sanjay as a violent individual with a criminal history. “They said his first wife too died under suspicious circumstances, for which he went to jail three years ago. After his release, he married Roshni and now he has been accused of her murder,” the DCP stated. This confirms that Sanjay Kumar had previously served a prison sentence for the murder of his first wife.
The police are currently conducting a manhunt for the absconding engineer. The case underscores severe lapses and raises critical questions about the monitoring of individuals with violent criminal records after their release. It also highlights the persistent and deadly menace of dowry harassment and domestic violence in society, which claimed two lives from the same perpetrator.
