Justice J.L. Gupta's Inspiring Final Chapter: A Three-Year Battle with Cancer

Late Justice J.L. Gupta, born on January 22, 1942, and passing away on January 3, 2016, left behind a remarkable legacy spanning 35 years at the Bar and 15 years on the Bench. This tribute explores the last three and a half years of his life, from June 2012 to January 2016, highlighting his unyielding fight against cancer and his enduring spirit.

A Fateful Holiday and Sudden Health Crisis

In June 2012, Justice Gupta and his family embarked on a holiday to Scotland. Known for his occasional enjoyment of scotch since 1963, he surprisingly felt no desire to drink during the trip. Similarly, despite Scotland being a golfing haven, he showed no interest in the sport. The family returned to India in early July, unaware of the impending health crisis.

On July 10, 2012, Justice Gupta worked through the day as usual. The next morning, July 11, everything changed dramatically. He developed a severe headache and nausea, preventing him from attending court. Medical tests, including MRI scans, revealed a brain tumour diagnosed as glioblastoma. The neurosurgeon advised immediate removal, and surgery was performed on August 28.

The Grueling Treatment and Unwavering Spirit

The surgery lasted over nine hours, during which Justice Gupta encouraged the surgeon, saying, "You are competent. I am confident. You will make history." Post-surgery, he faced complications, including meningitis confirmed on September 2, requiring ICU care and continuous antibiotic infusions. After recovery, he was discharged home to undergo radiotherapy and chemotherapy cycles, which brought significant side effects and challenges.

Despite these hardships, Justice Gupta remained resilient. On his 72nd birthday on January 22, 2014, he received a book titled Legends in Law with a handwritten message: "Tough times do not last. Tough people do. May you go on forever. Happy Birthday." His personal philosophy emphasized courage and conviction, believing that a strong desire to live could combat disease. He advocated for keeping the mind happy, especially for cancer patients.

Inspiring Others and Literary Contributions

By early 2015, Justice Gupta was doing relatively well, writing blogs despite low immunity. He visited Chandigarh, where he shared his story with audiences at the Rotary Club Chandigarh Midtown, Fortis Hospital in Mohali, and the Association of British Scholars. His talks inspired many, filled with laughter and hope, leading many to believe he had conquered the disease.

His urge to enjoy life returned, and he decided to document his journey. He authored the book The Ringside View – The Story of a Fight Against Cancer, which, along with another collection titled Of Life and Me, was released on December 16, 2015, by then Chief Justice of India, Justice T.S. Thakur. Justice Gupta greeted attendees with warm handshakes, showcasing his enduring spirit.

Final Days and Lasting Legacy

Tragically, within days of the book release, he was diagnosed with pneumonia and hospitalized. Doctors fought tirelessly, but he passed away on January 3, 2016. While he had conquered cancer, he succumbed to pneumonia, leaving a void in the hearts of many.

Today, on what would have been his 84th birthday on January 22, 2026, we fondly remember Justice J.L. Gupta. His journey serves as a testament to resilience, inspiring countless individuals facing similar battles. May his soul rest in peace, embraced eternally in divine warmth.

Note: Balram Gupta, former director of the National Judicial Academy in Indore and professor emeritus of law at Panjab University, shares this heartfelt remembrance.
