ISRO Intern Among Trio Arrested for Navsari Jewellery Shop Robbery Attempt
In a startling development, an aeronautical engineer with a history of theft cases and a prestigious internship at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has been arrested along with two other men for a botched robbery attempt at a jewellery shop in Navsari, Gujarat. The incident, which occurred recently, left the shop owner injured after being shot twice during the confrontation.
Swift Police Action Leads to Arrests
The accused individuals have been identified as 25-year-old Umang Vachhani, 39-year-old Rajnikant Makwana, and 23-year-old Manoj Survyavanshi, all residents of Valsad. They were apprehended within hours of the crime by a coordinated effort involving teams from the Navsari Local Crime Branch (LCB), Special Operations Group (SOG), cybercrime unit, and Bilimora police.
According to police reports, Vachhani and Makwana entered Chanchal Jewellers with the intent to carry out the robbery, while Survyavanshi waited outside in a getaway car. The plan was foiled when the shop owner, Ashok Katariya, resisted their advances and raised an alarm. As the perpetrators fled the scene, Vachhani allegedly fired two rounds at Katariya, resulting in injuries.
Extensive Investigation and Tracking
Navsari Superintendent of Police, Rahul Patel, revealed that investigators meticulously scanned nearly 300 CCTV cameras to trace the movements of the accused. The getaway vehicle was eventually located in an industrial area of Chikhli, which ultimately led to their arrest in Valsad.
Police disclosed that the trio attempted to cover their tracks by removing the car's number plate and abandoning it in a quarry. They changed their clothes and footwear before reaching the main road and later used a rented vehicle to return home, showcasing a calculated effort to evade capture.
Background of the Key Accused
Umang Vachhani, who holds a degree in aeronautical engineering from Silver Oak University in Ahmedabad, graduated in 2022. He subsequently completed a seven-month internship at ISRO's Ahmedabad unit before joining a private aerospace firm at the end of 2023, where he worked for approximately a year.
Despite his academic and professional achievements, Vachhani has a criminal background. Officials stated that he was involved in multiple theft cases during his student years and has been booked in 11 vehicle theft cases in Ahmedabad since 2023. These cases were registered at various police stations including Satellite, Navrangpura, Ghatlodia, Vadaj, Gujarat University, and Vastrapur. As a result, he was detained under the PASA Act by the Ahmedabad police commissioner.
Planning and Motive Behind the Crime
Preliminary investigations indicate that Vachhani meticulously planned the robbery over the past two months, conducting a recce of the jewellery shop with Makwana. He was allegedly in possession of a firearm during this period, and police are currently probing the source of the weapon and the specific motive behind targeting this particular shop.
Authorities believe that Vachhani used his education and technical knowledge to orchestrate the crime, drawing inspiration from web series. He procured items such as masks and gloves online to conceal his identity and was also involved in online gaming activities. Investigators are working to determine the exact motive, as the accused has provided varying statements. The jeweller, Ashok Katariya, is being questioned to ascertain any prior acquaintance with Vachhani.
This case highlights a disturbing intersection of high education and criminal activity, raising questions about background checks and the psychological factors driving such behavior. The police continue their investigation to uncover all aspects of this planned heist and ensure justice is served.
