Indonesia Launches Manhunt for Acid Attack Suspects Targeting Military Critic

Indonesian authorities have intensified their search for four individuals wanted in connection with a brutal acid attack that left a prominent human rights activist severely injured. The victim, Andrie Yunus, deputy coordinator of the KontraS rights group, was targeted last week while riding his motorcycle in Jakarta.

Details of the Vicious Assault

According to official statements from KontraS, Andrie Yunus was approached by two men on a scooter. One of the assailants threw a corrosive substance at him, causing significant injuries to his face, right eye, hands, and torso. CCTV footage reviewed by Jakarta police reveals that four suspects on two scooters were following the activist prior to the attack.

Police official Iman Imanuddin confirmed that forensic examinations are currently underway on a motorcycle helmet and a container believed to have held the acid used in this violent incident. The investigation aims to gather concrete evidence to identify and apprehend those responsible.

Activist's Condition and Background

KontraS representative Jane Rosalina reported that Andrie's most severe injury is to his right eye. He is currently receiving specialized medical treatment in an intensive care unit. Andrie Yunus has been an outspoken critic of efforts to increase the military's influence within the Indonesian government. Notably, he had just finished recording a podcast discussing this very topic when he was attacked.

International Condemnation and Calls for Justice

The United Nations has voiced strong condemnation of this attack. UN rights chief Volker Turk expressed being "deeply concerned" by what he described as a "horrific acid attack." He emphasized on social media platform X that "those responsible for this cowardly act of violence must be held to account." Turk further stressed that human rights defenders "must be protected in their vital work and able to raise without fear issues of public concern."

Adding to the international pressure, UN special rapporteur on human rights defenders Mary Lawlor called for a thorough and impartial investigation into what she labeled an "unacceptable" assault. Domestically, Indonesia's Minister for Law and Human Rights, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, has pledged that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.

Broader Context of Democratic Concerns

This attack occurs against a backdrop of growing concerns about democratic freedoms in Indonesia. In its latest report, Human Rights Watch highlighted that Indonesia "has undergone further democratic backsliding, crackdowns on protests, media censorship, and intimidation of activists" under President Prabowo Subianto, a former general who took office in 2024. The targeting of Andrie Yunus, a vocal opponent of increased military involvement in governance, underscores these alarming trends.

The Jakarta police continue their manhunt, with the case drawing significant attention both nationally and internationally as a test of Indonesia's commitment to protecting human rights and upholding the rule of law.
