HS Prannoy Forced to Withdraw from Orleans Masters After Shoulder Injury

In a significant setback for Indian badminton, top shuttler HS Prannoy has officially withdrawn from the Orleans Masters Super 300 tournament. The decision comes after the experienced player sustained a shoulder injury during his participation in last week's Swiss Open held in Basel.

Prannoy was originally scheduled to face a formidable opponent in the opening round: top seed Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei. However, the injury has forced him to reconsider his participation and prioritize recovery.

Injury Details and Recovery Timeline

The shoulder issue first emerged while Prannoy was traveling to the Swiss Open. "The shoulder pain developed after travelling to the Swiss Open. We didn't know the reason then, so I decided to withdraw and fly back," Prannoy explained in a statement to PTI.

Upon returning to India, medical scans revealed the extent of the damage: a minor tear in his shoulder. Despite the diagnosis, Prannoy remains optimistic about his recovery prospects. "After a scan it showed a slight tear. It is a minor thing and hopefully I should be okay soon," he added.

The Indian star is now focusing his efforts on rehabilitation with a clear target in mind: returning to competitive action in time for the upcoming Asian Championships scheduled to take place in Ningbo, China.

Young Indian Players Step Up to Lead Campaign

With Prannoy sidelined, the responsibility of carrying India's hopes at the Orleans Masters falls to the nation's emerging badminton talents. The spotlight will be particularly bright on:

  • Ayush Shetty: The eighth-seeded rising star, currently ranked world No. 25, enters as one of India's main contenders following his impressive victory at the US Open Super 300 last year. Shetty begins his campaign against Lee Chia Hao.
  • Kidambi Srikanth: The former world No. 1 brings experience and pedigree as he prepares to face Magnus Johannesen of Denmark.
  • Tharun Mannepalli: Fresh from reaching the quarterfinals at the Swiss Open, Mannepalli looks to build on his recent momentum.
  • Kiran George: The young shuttler who stunned former world champion Loh Kean Yew in Basel will aim to replicate that giant-killing form.

Women's Singles and Doubles Events in Focus

India's challenge extends beyond the men's singles category, with several promising players competing across different disciplines:

In women's singles, young talent Tanvi Sharma - silver medallist at the BWF World Junior Championships - will face Supanida Katethong. Meanwhile, Malvika Bansod makes a welcome return to competition after recovering from a long-term knee injury, taking on Sung Shuo Yun in her opening match.

The doubles events also feature strong Indian representation with pairs such as:

  1. Hariharan Amsakarunan and M R Arjun in men's doubles
  2. Dhruv Kapila partnering with Tanisha Crasto in mixed doubles

These combinations will look to make deep runs in the tournament and keep India's medal hopes alive across multiple categories.

The Orleans Masters represents an important opportunity for India's next generation of badminton stars to gain valuable experience and make their mark on the international stage, even as the team navigates the absence of one of its most experienced campaigners.
