Indian Seafarer's Family in Anguish as LPG Ship Stranded in Qatar Amid Conflict
Family members of Ashok Kumar Dixit, the chief officer of an LPG-loaded ship currently stranded at the Ras Laffan anchorage in Qatar, are living in profound anxiety and distress. With the near collapse of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz due to escalating regional tensions, Ashok and his crew have been confined to their loaded vessel since February 28, when the conflict between Israel and Iran intensified.
Stranded in a Conflict Zone
Ashok was originally scheduled to return home to Cuttack on March 10, after completing his contract with a private shipping company. "He and other crew members are stuck in the conflict zone," revealed Bishnu Charan Sahu, his father-in-law, who resides in Berhampur. The family had held out hope for his safe return following the recent passage of two loaded Indian ships, Shivalik and Nanda Devi, which successfully transported cooking gas to Gujarat via the Persian Gulf.
However, as noted by Srutirekha Sahoo, Ashok's wife, nearly a week has passed with no clarity on the passage of other vessels, including her husband's. "With reports of missiles and drone attacks, we are spending sleepless nights, even though we talk to him every day through video call and praying for his safety," she shared. Srutirekha, a primary school teacher and mother of a six-year-old girl, emphasized the family's daily struggles with fear and uncertainty.
Appeals for Government Intervention
The family has urgently appealed to the Indian government to take immediate steps to ensure the safe passage of Ashok's vessel, where 28 other crew members are also stranded, and to facilitate their return to India. According to Srutirekha, Ashok and his colleagues are increasingly worried about depleting supplies of food and drinking water onboard. "We hope the govt will take immediate steps regarding the passage of the vessels," she reiterated, highlighting the critical nature of the situation.
The ongoing conflict has not only disrupted global shipping routes but has also led to significant economic impacts, such as the reported strike on Qatar's Ras Laffan facility, which affected 17% of the country's LNG capacity and resulted in an estimated $20 billion loss.
