Congress MLA Accuses BJP of Offering Money for Rajya Sabha Vote, Claims He Rejected It
In a dramatic development from Patna, Congress MLA Abhishek Ranjan, representing Chanpatia, made serious allegations on Friday, claiming that money was offered to him to ensure the victory of a BJP candidate in the recent Rajya Sabha elections. Ranjan asserted that he firmly refused the offer, standing by his principles and party loyalty.
"Amount Could Have Compromised Anyone's Integrity," Says MLA
When questioned by reporters about the specifics of the alleged bribe, Ranjan responded with a poignant statement. "The amount was so substantial that it could have easily swayed anyone's 'jameer'—their inner personal value and honesty," he explained. "As a simple party worker who was entrusted with contesting the assembly election, I chose to place my faith in the party's credo, the Constitution of our country, and the democratic process. I emerged from this situation untainted."
Voting Controversy and Internal Congress Discord
The Rajya Sabha election, held on March 16, was marked by controversy as three Congress MLAs abstained from voting. However, Ranjan defied this trend by casting his vote in favor of the Grand Alliance nominee from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). This move highlighted internal divisions within the Congress party in Bihar.
Two of the abstaining Congress MLAs had previously alleged that All India Congress Committee (AICC) incharge for Bihar, Krishna Allavaru, and state Congress president Rajesh Ram instructed them they were "free to take their own decision" regarding their vote for the Grand Alliance candidate. In contrast, Ranjan countered this, stating, "Allavaru had clearly directed all party MLAs to vote for the Grand Alliance candidate from the RJD."
BJP Dismisses Allegations as "Imaginary Claims"
Reacting swiftly to Ranjan's accusations, BJP spokesperson Manoj Sharma outright rejected the claims. "He and others like him are merely fabricating imaginary stories. There is absolutely no truth to these allegations," Sharma stated, dismissing the bribery charge as baseless.
Election Outcome and Allegations of Horse Trading
The Grand Alliance candidate, Amarendra Dhari Singh, a sitting Rajya Sabha member of the RJD, ultimately lost to the BJP nominee, Shivesh Ram. This defeat was compounded by an RJD MLA also abstaining from voting, further complicating the electoral dynamics.
Ranjan elaborated on his suspicions, pointing to the BJP's strategic moves. "After the nomination papers were filed and the NDA fielded its fifth candidate from the BJP, it became evident that the BJP would engage in horse trading," he alleged, suggesting a premeditated effort to sway votes through unethical means.
Broader Implications for Bihar Politics
This incident sheds light on the intense political maneuvering in Bihar, where Rajya Sabha elections often become battlegrounds for influence and power. The allegations of bribery, if proven, could have significant repercussions, potentially undermining public trust in the electoral process and highlighting the challenges of maintaining party discipline in coalition politics.
As the controversy unfolds, it raises critical questions about the integrity of democratic institutions and the measures needed to safeguard against corruption in elections. The conflicting narratives within the Congress party further expose internal rifts that could impact its cohesion and effectiveness in future political contests.
