Indian Content Creator Details Harrowing Detention in South Korea and China
Indian content creator Sachin Awasthi has shared a distressing account of being detained by immigration authorities in both South Korea and China while traveling with his wife. Posting on Instagram, Awasthi described a 38-hour detention on Jeju Island in South Korea, where the couple was denied entry without clear explanation.
Detention on Jeju Island: A Jail-Like Experience
Sachin Awasthi recounted being taken to a holding area after authorities denied them entry. "No proper explanation just told to wait. And we waited," he wrote. He added that the detention centre resembled a jail, with no sunlight or access to the outside world, and they were served what he described as jail food. Awasthi claimed that officials pressured them into booking an expensive return ticket, exacerbating their ordeal.
Continued Hardship During Transit in China
The challenges persisted during their transit through China. Awasthi reported restricted communication, limited access to food and water, and monitored use of restrooms. "By the time we were told we would be sent back, we were mentally drained. The return ticket cost almost 10× the normal price," he stated, highlighting the financial and emotional toll.
Awasthi's Clarification and Broader Message
Awasthi clarified that his intention was not to seek sympathy or create drama. "Immigration decisions are their authority. But they did not have any right to treat us like criminals," he emphasized. He noted that travel, often portrayed as glamorous online, can unexpectedly test people emotionally. He has posted a detailed video on his YouTube channel, explaining the incident, its causes, and offering advice for travelers.
Social Media Reactions and Public Concern
Social media users expressed outrage and concern over the incident. One comment read, "Weak passport has got nothing to do with this. It’s how terribly the immigration and airlines of Jeju and China treated them. The entire video is heart-wrenching." Others shared similar sentiments, with one user stating, "This is a deeply rooted issue and needs to be talked about." Many highlighted the growing trend of travelers facing such harsh treatments, urging greater awareness and dialogue on immigration practices.
The incident underscores the unpredictable challenges travelers can face, raising questions about immigration protocols and the treatment of foreign nationals in transit scenarios.
