Indian Coast Guard Intercepts Smuggling Vessel with Iranian Crew in EEZ
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) successfully intercepted a suspicious foreign vessel within India's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) on Sunday, February 21, 2026. The operation, which took place approximately 115 nautical miles west of Dwarka, led to the discovery of a large consignment of smuggled foreign-brand cigarettes.
Details of the Interception and Seizure
In a post on social media platform X, the Indian Coast Guard announced the interception of the boat, identified as Al Mukhtar. Upon boarding, officials found the vessel manned by four Iranian crew members. A thorough search of the storage areas revealed 200 cartons containing around one lakh packets of foreign-brand cigarettes, which were concealed deep inside the boat.
The Coast Guard has taken the boat and its crew into custody. The vessel is currently being escorted to Porbandar for further investigation and joint questioning with other concerned agencies, including law enforcement and intelligence units.
Context and Recent Maritime Operations
This seizure follows closely on the heels of another significant maritime operation conducted by the Indian Coast Guard. On February 17, 2026, the ICG, in collaboration with the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad, executed an intelligence-based operation at sea, highlighting the ongoing efforts to enhance maritime security and combat illicit activities in Indian waters.
The interception underscores the Coast Guard's vigilance in monitoring the EEZ, a critical area for national security and economic interests. Smuggling operations, such as this one involving cigarettes, pose threats to public health, revenue loss, and potential links to broader criminal networks.
Authorities are expected to conduct a detailed probe into the origins and destination of the smuggled goods, as well as the involvement of the crew. This incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced in securing India's vast maritime borders and the importance of coordinated efforts among agencies.
