Labourer in Hyderabad Kills Wife, Son in Alcohol-Fueled Rage; Daughter Critical
In a horrific incident that has shocked the community, a labourer in Hyderabad allegedly bludgeoned his wife and their young son to death in a fit of drunken rage early Tuesday morning. The attack, which occurred in the Puligonipalli thanda hamlet of Amangal in Rangareddy district, also left the couple's daughter critically injured and fighting for her life at Osmania General Hospital.
Details of the Tragic Incident
According to police reports, the accused, identified as Banavath Ramdas Naik, returned home late on Monday night after consuming alcohol. Naik, who works at a local cotton mill earning approximately Rs 12,000 per month, reportedly spent most of his salary on liquor, leaving very little for household expenses managed by his wife, Kavitha, 31, who worked as a construction worker.
The argument began when Kavitha confronted Naik about his drinking habits and financial neglect. After the initial confrontation, the couple and their two younger children—seven-year-old Harshit and nine-year-old Pranitha—went to sleep. However, the violence erupted around 5:30 am when Naik woke up and demanded money from his wife to purchase more liquor.
"They had an argument again and in a fit of rage, Naik picked up a pestle from the kitchen and attacked Kavitha on the head. She collapsed on the spot," stated Amangal inspector K Venkateswarlu.
Children Become Victims of Father's Violence
The noise from the attack woke the sleeping children, who discovered their mother lying on the floor with severe bleeding injuries. As the children began screaming for help, Naik turned his violence toward them, assaulting both Harshit and Pranitha with the same pestle. Both children collapsed with critical head injuries.
"Kavitha and Harshit died on the spot. We shifted Pranitha to OGH. She suffered a severe head injury and her condition is critical," Inspector Venkateswarlu confirmed.
Following the brutal assault, Naik left the home and began wandering through the hamlet. It wasn't until around 6:30 am that neighbors discovered the horrific scene—the victims lying motionless with bleeding injuries—and immediately alerted local authorities and police.
Police Response and Legal Action
Police quickly responded to the scene and apprehended Naik from the hamlet. He is currently in police custody facing serious charges. A case has been registered against him under sections 103(1) (murder) and 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The investigation revealed that the family's two older daughters were fortunately not present during the attack. The 12-year-old elder daughter was staying at her grandmother's house nearby, while the second daughter was at her school hostel.
Broader Implications and Community Impact
This tragic incident highlights several critical social issues:
- Alcohol abuse and domestic violence: The case underscores how substance abuse can escalate into deadly domestic violence
- Financial strain on families: The disproportionate spending on alcohol versus household needs created ongoing tension
- Impact on children: The attack demonstrates how domestic violence often extends to children, with devastating consequences
- Community safety concerns: The incident has raised questions about intervention mechanisms for at-risk families
The local community in Amangal remains in shock over the brutality of the attack, particularly given that it involved young children. As police continue their investigation, the focus remains on the recovery of the surviving daughter and ensuring justice for the victims.
