Howrah Couple Arrested for Murder of Mother Over Charity Work Dispute

In a shocking incident from Fatikgachhi, Jagatballavpur, a couple was arrested on Friday for the murder of the man's 62-year-old mother, Sushama Denre. The case has sent ripples through the local community, highlighting a tragic family conflict stemming from charitable activities.

Discovery of the Body and Initial Investigation

The woman's body was discovered inside a sack lying by a deserted road on Thursday evening, prompting immediate police action. Howrah Rural Police swiftly launched an investigation, leading to the arrest of the victim's son, Shubhankar Denre (36), and his wife, Papiya (37).

During interrogation, Shubhankar confessed to the crime, revealing that he had been fed up with his mother's charitable work, which he claimed was straining the family's financial resources. He stated that he had repeatedly asked Sushama to cut down on expenses, but she refused to comply. The situation escalated when Papiya also made similar requests, leading to Sushama allegedly mistreating her daughter-in-law.

Background of the Victim and Motive

Sushama Denre was known in the area for her philanthropic efforts, regularly feeding beggars and providing them with medical and other forms of assistance. After Shubhankar stopped giving her money, she sold her jewellery to continue her charitable work, further intensifying the family tensions. This act of dedication to her cause became a point of contention, ultimately leading to the tragic outcome.

Shubhankar detailed the murder plan to the police, explaining that he and Papiya conspired to kill Sushama. He restrained her hands and feet while Papiya strangled her. Following the murder, Shubhankar placed the body in a sack and dumped it in bushes near a deserted road, attempting to conceal the crime.

Police Action and Legal Proceedings

Howrah Rural Police's additional SP, Santosh Mondal, provided insights into the case, stating, "Based on the confession of the son and his wife, and CCTV footage, both were arrested. They were presented in Howrah Court. Shubhankar was taken into police custody, while Papiya was sent to jail custody." The use of technological evidence like CCTV footage played a crucial role in corroborating the confessions and securing the arrests.

Shubhankar works as a senior executive at a multinational company in Salt Lake, and Papiya hails from New Town, adding a layer of complexity to the case given their professional backgrounds. The incident underscores how domestic disputes can escalate into violent crimes, even in seemingly stable households.

This case serves as a grim reminder of the potential consequences of unresolved family conflicts and the importance of addressing financial and emotional issues through dialogue rather than violence. The community remains in shock as legal proceedings continue to unfold.
