In a significant breakthrough, the Hoshiarpur police have claimed to have solved the murder case of 60-year-old Rachna with the arrest of her nephew, Rakesh Kumar. The arrest was made on Sunday, bringing closure to a crime that had shocked the local community.

Arrest and Recovery of Evidence

Rakesh Kumar was taken into custody by the police, who recovered crucial evidence from his possession. This included a .32 bore pistol, three live cartridges, and a sickle. Additionally, a motorcycle that was used in the commission of the crime was seized by the authorities.

Rachna, the victim, was the wife of retired Punjab Police sub-inspector Sham Lal. She was tragically shot dead by a motorcycle-borne assailant while returning from a shrine in Mahindwani village near Garhshankar. The incident occurred at 5:30 am on February 7, sending ripples of fear through the area.

Investigation and Confession

A dedicated police team, led by Garhshankar DSP Daljit Singh Khakh, meticulously investigated the case and zeroed in on Rakesh Kumar as the prime suspect. During intense questioning, Rakesh revealed that he ran a ready-made garments shop in Gondpur, Himachal Pradesh.

He confessed to the police that he harbored a deep-seated belief that Rachna practiced black magic. According to his statement, he suspected that her alleged occult practices were responsible for his father's death and had negatively impacted his business. Driven by these suspicions, he plotted to kill his aunt.

Premeditated Attacks and Execution

The police disclosed that before the day of the murder, Rakesh had attempted to attack Rachna twice while she was on her way to the shrine. However, on both occasions, he backed out due to overwhelming fear.

In a calculated move two days prior to the crime, Rakesh sent his wife and children to her parental village. Using the pretext of a car breakdown, he borrowed a motorcycle to carry out the murder. On the fateful morning, he shot Rachna three times and fled the scene on the motorcycle. To avoid detection, he had turned off his mobile phone beforehand, as confirmed by the police.

This arrest marks a crucial step in delivering justice for Rachna and her family, highlighting the diligent efforts of the Hoshiarpur police in solving this long-standing case.
