The victim, Shyamal Karmakar, succumbed to his injuries days after being severely beaten and humiliated in front of his community.
The Fatal Assault Over a Small Debt
The events unfolded in the village of Char Kakra under the Sonaimuri police station in Noakhali district. According to reports, the conflict stemmed from a small unpaid debt of 360 Bangladeshi Taka (roughly equivalent to ₹260 or $3). The primary accused, identified as Liton Miah, allegedly demanded the money from the 35-year-old Shyamal Karmakar.
When Karmakar was unable to repay the amount immediately, the situation turned violent. On June 23, Liton Miah, accompanied by several associates, reportedly attacked Karmakar. The assailants did not stop at physical violence; they subjected him to severe public humiliation, an act that has sent shockwaves through the local community.
Hospitalization and Subsequent Death
After the savage beating, Shyamal Karmakar's condition deteriorated rapidly. He was initially treated at the Sonaimuri Upazila Health Complex. However, due to the severity of his injuries, he was later transferred to the more advanced Noakhali General Hospital.
Despite medical efforts, Karmakar could not recover. He passed away while undergoing treatment on Saturday, July 13. His death has transformed a case of assault into a murder investigation, amplifying calls for justice from his family and minority community leaders.
