In a significant breakthrough, the Himachal Pradesh Police have apprehended a key accused in a major charas smuggling case, dealing a severe blow to an interstate drug trafficking network. The arrest marks a crucial step in the state's ongoing efforts to combat narcotics trade across regional borders.
Arrest of Accused from Jammu and Kashmir
According to a spokesperson from the Himachal Pradesh Police Department, Vijay Kumar, also known as VK, was arrested from his residence in Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir, on March 22. The operation was conducted by a CIA team from Nurpur in Kangra district, highlighting the coordinated efforts of law enforcement agencies across state lines.
Background of the Case and Initial Seizure
The case originated on October 11, 2025, when an FIR was registered at Police Station Nurpur following the recovery of 6 kilograms of charas during a checkpoint operation at the Kandwal barrier. During this initial bust, three accused individuals from Mandi were arrested on the spot, setting the stage for a deeper investigation into the smuggling network.
Identification and Arrest of Main Accused
Subsequent investigations led to the identification of Shubhkaran, a resident of Samkehar in Jawali, Kangra district, as the main accused in the case. He was arrested from Chandigarh on November 1, 2025. Further probing revealed that the recovered consignment of narcotics was intended to be received by Vijay Kumar, linking him directly to the trafficking operation.

The spokesperson emphasized that this operation has significantly disrupted an interstate drug trafficking network with connections spanning Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir. By arresting Vijay Kumar, the police have not only nabbed a key player but also sent a strong message against cross-border narcotics activities.
