High Court Flags Ludhiana Police for Relying on Dead Man's Statement
HC Flags Ludhiana Police Over Dead Man's Statement

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has termed as 'inexplicable' a case in which the Ludhiana police relied on a statement allegedly made by a person nearly four months after his death. Taking note of the issue, the court directed Punjab's Special DGP (Law and Order) to look into the matter and submit a detailed report by May 18.

Case Background

The direction came from a bench headed by Justice Sumeet Goel while hearing an anticipatory bail plea filed by one Manvir Singh. The FIR in question was registered at Dehlon police station in Ludhiana district on August 18 last year, invoking charges of murder, criminal conspiracy, and destruction of evidence.

Alleged Statement After Death

The petitioner's counsel argued that the police relied on a statement dated September 19, 2025, attributed to Gurpreet Singh. However, records show that Gurpreet Singh passed away on May 29, 2025, nearly four months before the alleged statement was recorded.

Calling the circumstances highly questionable, the court sought an explanation from the Special DGP (Law and Order). It also ordered that no coercive action be taken against the petitioner until the next hearing.

Additionally, the court directed the Dehlon Station House Officer to remain present with the case diary on the next date.
