Indian Railways has approved multiple railway underbridge and overbridge projects in Phagwara, addressing long-standing demands from residents to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity. The approvals come after repeated representations highlighting difficulties caused by prolonged closure of railway crossings on the Phagwara-Ludhiana rail route.
Former Minister announces approvals
Former Union Minister Som Parkash announced the approvals during a press conference in Phagwara. He stated that the Railway Ministry sanctioned several key infrastructure projects that will significantly improve connectivity and provide relief to commuters.
Among the approved projects is a railway underbridge connecting Gobindpura with the Industrial Area. Residents of Gobindpura had been demanding this project for years, as they were forced to cross railway tracks even to reach the cremation ground. Construction is expected to begin shortly.
Nangal underbridge work resumes
Work on the Nangal railway underbridge, which had already been sanctioned, was delayed due to pending permission for tree felling. After the required amount was deposited and necessary clearance obtained, construction has resumed and is likely to be completed soon.
Som Parkash also confirmed that the Railway Ministry has approved an underpass at Satnampura near Sugar Mill chowk, fulfilling a long-standing demand of residents and traders from Satnampura and Hadiabad, who faced severe inconvenience crossing the railway line.
Overbridge and completed projects
Approval has also been granted for a railway overbridge at Khera road. The project will proceed after completion of required documentation and formalities with the Punjab Government.
Som Parkash noted that the Mauli railway underbridge has already been completed, providing major relief to school students, employees and local residents by ensuring safe and smooth connectivity.
“These infrastructure projects will considerably reduce traffic congestion, improve road safety and enhance connectivity across Phagwara,” Som Parkash said.
