Accused in Gurlal Brar Murder Case Shot Dead in Broad Daylight Outside Mohali SSP Office
In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves through the region, an accused in the high-profile Gurlal Brar murder case was shot dead in broad daylight outside the office of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Mohali on Wednesday. The brazen attack occurred in a sensitive and heavily guarded zone, raising serious concerns about public safety and the audacity of criminal elements in the area.
Details of the Fatal Attack
The deceased has been identified as Gurvinder Singh, also known as Guri, a resident of village Rurki Pukhta. According to police reports, Gurvinder had come to Mohali along with his wife to attend a court hearing related to a case involving the recovery of 4 kilograms of opium. The incident took place near the main gate of the SSP office when Gurvinder was getting into his vehicle.
Eyewitness accounts describe a chilling scene. Janit Dogra, a lawyer who was present at the scene, told The Indian Express that two assailants arrived on a motorcycle. One of them, described as a tall, fair-complexioned man wearing a cap with his face partially covered, opened fire at close range. Dogra initially mistook the loud noises for a tyre burst but soon realized he was witnessing a targeted shooting.
The attackers fired multiple rounds at Gurvinder Singh, killing him on the spot. His wife, who was with him at the time, narrowly escaped death after a bullet grazed her head. She managed to escape the scene and was later taken to the hospital by police. The forensic team collected approximately 17 empty cartridges from the road, indicating the intensity of the attack.
Claims of Responsibility and Viral Audio Clip
Following the murder, a post from an account purportedly belonging to Canada-based terrorist Goldy Brar and Rohit Godara claimed responsibility for the killing. The post stated, "Goldy Brar, Rohit Godara, and Vicky Pehlwan take responsibility for the murder of Gurvinder," adding that the action was in retaliation for the murder of their brother Gurlal Brar.
An audio clip has also gone viral, reiterating the same claim. In the clip, the speakers accuse Gurvinder of being involved in Gurlal Brar's murder and criticize the police for not taking the case seriously. "The police did not consider that case important, because at that time there was neither any singer involved nor was he related to or the son of any political figure," the audio said, alleging that police defamed Gurlal by labeling him a gangster to avoid proper investigation.
Police Investigation and Response
According to DIG Nanak Singh, CCTV footage is being closely examined, and the police have already received vital leads. The attackers reportedly fled towards the Banur side, and the Patiala police have been alerted. The city has been sealed, with CIA staff, AGTF, and other police teams mobilized for the investigation.
DIG Ropar Range, Nanak Singh, confirmed that Gurvinder Singh was out on bail at the time of the incident. Police are also verifying whether the deceased had links to other criminal cases, including high-profile murders. "We have developed strong leads regarding those involved in the crime. Multiple police teams have been formed, and we expect arrests soon. The case appears to be linked to gang-related rivalry," the DIG stated while addressing the media.
An FIR has been registered in this case, and the investigation is ongoing. The police thoroughly checked the victim's car while his wife was present at the scene, collecting additional evidence.
Background: The Gurlal Brar Murder Case
Gurlal Brar, a former president of the Student Organisation of Panjab University and cousin of Goldy Brar, was shot dead in October 2020 outside a mall in Chandigarh. His murder had already highlighted the volatile nature of gang rivalries in the region, and today's incident underscores the continuing cycle of violence.
Rising Gang Violence in Mohali
This brazen killing has intensified concerns about rising gang violence in Mohali. In recent months, the city has witnessed several high-profile violent incidents, including:

Today's attack, occurring in a heavily guarded zone, has once again raised serious questions about the effectiveness of law enforcement and the growing boldness of criminal networks in the area. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the challenges faced in maintaining public safety amidst escalating gang rivalries.
