Police in Gurgaon have taken two young boys into custody after a dangerous spate of stone-throwing from above a busy underpass caused significant damage to multiple vehicles and narrowly avoided serious injury to a driver. The incident, which occurred on Monday, led to a police case and a structural audit of the site.
CCTV Footage Leads to Apprehension of Minors
According to authorities, the breakthrough in the case came from closed-circuit television footage reviewed on Wednesday. The video clearly showed two children, aged just 9 and 12 years old, hurling stones while playing near a shed located above the Hero Honda Chowk underpass. The stones rained down on the traffic passing below.
Police spokesperson Sandeep Turan (ASI) stated that the children have been apprehended. In line with juvenile justice protocols, "The children will be counselled through the Child Welfare Committee," he said. Further legal action is being determined.
Driver's Terrifying Ordeal Sparks Investigation
The alarming series of events first came to light when a resident of Delhi's Nangloi area filed a police complaint. He reported that around 8:15 PM on Monday, a heavy stone crashed through the windscreen of his Tata Nexon as he was driving through the underpass.
The impact completely shattered the windscreen, and the debris narrowly missed hitting him directly. Showing remarkable presence of mind, the driver managed to bring his vehicle to a safe stop before approaching the police at the Sadar police station.
Social Media Outcry and Official Audit
Following the initial report, several other commuters took to social media to share similar harrowing experiences. They claimed that stones or pieces of concrete had struck their vehicles at the same underpass location, indicating a pattern rather than an isolated event.
This prompted authorities to conduct a thorough check of the infrastructure. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) performed a structural audit of the Hero Honda Chowk underpass. Their conclusive finding ruled out any construction flaw or structural defect causing falling debris.
Officials confirmed that the damage to vehicles was solely due to stones being thrown from above and not from any collapse or failure of the underpass itself.
Based on the evidence, a formal case has been registered under Section 324(5) pertaining to mischief under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The Gurgaon police have affirmed that all subsequent action will proceed strictly in accordance with the law, with a focus on the rehabilitation and counselling of the involved minors.
