A tragic incident at an under-construction site in Gurgaon's Sector 56 claimed the life of a young labourer and left two others injured on Monday evening. The catastrophe unfolded when a section of a basement wall suddenly gave way, trapping three workers under a heap of debris and mud.
Timeline of the Gurgaon Construction Site Collapse
The collapse occurred at approximately 6:50 pm on Monday. At the time, three labourers were engaged in work inside the building's basement. Eyewitnesses reported that the wall portion collapsed without warning, leaving the workers with virtually no time to react or escape. The sudden event caused immediate panic among others present at the construction location.
Massive Rescue Operation Launched
Upon receiving the alert, a multi-agency response was swiftly mobilized. Teams from the Gurgaon Police, the fire department, civil defence, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rushed to the spot to initiate a challenging rescue operation. Given the risk of further collapse, heavy machinery was deployed with extreme caution to carefully remove the debris and mud that had buried the workers.
After sustained efforts, two of the labourers were successfully pulled out alive from the wreckage. They have been identified as Gobind and Roshan. Both were promptly shifted to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment. Officials have stated that their condition is now stable.
Tragically, the third worker, 21-year-old Badal, was found unconscious during the rescue. A medical team present at the site examined him and declared him dead. Police confirmed that all three labourers were natives of Bihar.
Investigation and Aftermath
The body of the deceased was sent for a post-mortem examination, and the process of informing his family members has been initiated. Meanwhile, the Gurgaon Police have commenced a preliminary inquiry into the circumstances that led to the fatal collapse.
Authorities are recording statements from the injured workers, the contractor, and the site supervisor. A police official indicated that the focus of the investigation will include scrutinizing the role of the builder and the compliance with safety norms at the construction site. "We will register a case after a preliminary investigation, and we are trying to make contact with the family members of the deceased," an official stated.
This incident has once again cast a harsh spotlight on the critical issue of safety standards at rapidly developing construction sites across the National Capital Region, raising serious questions about enforcement and accountability.
