Missing Gujarat Teen Found in Surat with Woman Met on Instagram
In a case highlighting the influence of social media, a 17-year-old boy from Jetpur taluka in Gujarat, who had been missing since March 6, was successfully traced to Surat and found to be in the company of a 21-year-old woman he had met through Instagram. The Virpur police intervened, bringing both individuals back from Surat, where the minor was reunited with his relieved parents, while the woman was detained for questioning before being released after her statement was recorded.

The missing teen, a student at an Industrial Training Institute (ITI) who also works part-time at a petrol pump, had allegedly developed a romantic relationship with the woman over the past 18 months via Instagram. When he failed to return home, his father filed a kidnapping complaint against her under Section 137(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, prompting a police investigation.
Investigating officer S G Rathod revealed that technical surveillance played a crucial role in locating the pair in Surat. The woman, identified as an agricultural labourer from Jhabua district in Madhya Pradesh, had travelled to Gondal, where the minor joined her. From there, they took a bus to Surat together. Before departing, the student switched off his mobile phone but sent a message to his mother on Instagram, informing her that his motorcycle had been left at the Gondal bus station—a clue that aided authorities in their search.
Police Action and Legal Considerations
Upon being brought to the Virpur police station, the boy was immediately handed over to his parents, ending the distressing ordeal for the family. The woman was taken into custody for questioning to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident. After her statement was recorded, she was released without any charges being filed.
Police clarified that no physical relationship was involved in this case, which is why the woman was not booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
