Goa Police Reveals Youth in Tourist Areas Drawn into Drug Trade by Networks and Peer Pressure
Goa Youth Drawn into Drug Trade by Tourist Area Networks: Police

Goa Police Investigation Exposes Youth Drug Trade Entry in Tourist Zones

An investigation by Goa police has uncovered a troubling trend: young people from the state's popular tourist belts are increasingly getting involved in the drug trade. The primary drivers behind this shift are exposure to pre-existing drug networks in these areas and significant peer pressure, both identified as equally contributing factors.

Economic Motives and Arrest Statistics Highlight the Issue

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who also serves as the Home Minister, addressed the situation, stating that economic motives and the lure of quick financial gains are the primary reasons for youth involvement in narcotic activities. "Peer influence and exposure with existing drug networks in tourist and nightlife areas has forced youths' entry," Sawant explained.

To date, a total of 256 Goans have been arrested in connection with alleged narcotics cases, underscoring the scale of the problem within local communities.

Enhanced Police Measures and Surveillance Strategies

In response, Goa police have implemented a multi-faceted approach to combat the issue. Surveillance has been strengthened, intelligence collection intensified, and community policing enhanced. Coordination with social welfare and educational institutions is also underway to develop preventive and rehabilitative measures addressing the root causes.

Continuous police patrolling is maintained by staff specifically for intelligence gathering in this regard. Integrated nakabandi (checkpoints) have been devised at specific points, with police officers deployed from districts and units for checking duties.

Targeted Actions in High-Risk Areas

The police are focusing efforts on locations with high tourist footfall. Bars, restaurants, and shacks along the coastal area are subjected to surprise checks. Patrolling is maintained through beat staff, PCR vehicles, and motorcycles to ensure a visible presence and deterrence in these zones.

Awareness Programs and Public Education Initiatives

Police sleuths are actively working to educate youth, students, and the general public about the ill-effects of drugs, aiming to keep them away from both addiction and the trade. Various awareness programs are conducted regularly to inform and warn vulnerable groups.

Drug Disposal Procedures Post-Trial

After the final disposal of a case, the court orders the destruction of confiscated drugs. The substances to be disposed of, along with necessary case documents, are presented before the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Disposal Committee. The committee verifies the records, and the drugs are then incinerated at facilities such as GMC Bambolim and Biotic Waste Solutions in Kundaim, with two respectable persons and committee members present to oversee the process.
