In a significant breakthrough, the Saligao police have apprehended a man from Uttarakhand in connection with a daring daylight robbery in North Goa. The accused allegedly snatched a gold chain from a woman at her grocery shop in Porvorim just days before the New Year.
The Incident: A Pretext for a Cold Drink
The case unfolded on December 25, when the complainant, Medha Agshikar, a resident of Porvorim, was at her grocery store located in PDA Colony, Porvorim. According to the First Information Report (FIR) registered at the Saligao police station, two unidentified individuals arrived on a two-wheeler. They approached Agshikar under the guise of purchasing a cold drink. In a swift move, one of them snatched the gold chain with lockets directly from her neck before the duo fled the spot on their vehicle.
The Investigation and Inter-State Chase
Under the supervision of Police Inspector Milind Bhuimbar, a dedicated investigation was launched. Through meticulous investigative work, the police managed to identify one of the alleged perpetrators. "During the course of investigation, the accused was identified as Abdul Rahman, 32 years, a resident of Haridwar, Uttarakhand," stated PI Bhuimbar.
Acting swiftly on this lead, a team led by Police Sub-Inspector Akshay Fatarpekar traveled to Uttarakhand. With crucial assistance from the local Manglaur police station, the team successfully located and nabbed Abdul Rahman from his residence.
Legal Proceedings and Custody
Following the arrest in Uttarakhand, the Goa police obtained a necessary transit warrant to bring the accused back to the state. Rahman was subsequently transported to Goa and produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court in Mapusa. The court, considering the nature of the crime and the requirements of the investigation, granted the police four days of police custody for further interrogation and to possibly uncover details about his accomplice and the whereabouts of the stolen chain.
The arrest highlights the inter-state coordination of Indian police forces in tackling street crimes. The Saligao police's prompt action in tracking the suspect to a distant state has been noted as a key factor in cracking this case.
