Goa Cab Association Calls for High-Level Investigation After Fatal Tourist Accident

The All Goa Rent-A-Cab Owners' Association has filed a formal complaint with the Anjuna Police, demanding a thorough investigation into a tragic accident in Assagao last week that claimed the life of a 65-year-old tourist from Bhopal. The association alleges that the vehicles involved were operating in blatant violation of motor vehicle regulations, highlighting serious safety concerns in the state's rental car industry.

Illegal Rental Practices Under Scrutiny

In a detailed memorandum submitted to authorities, the association identified the two vehicles involved in the crash as a Mahindra Thar and a Hyundai i20. It asserted that both cars were being rented out illegally, without proper registration or permits. This unlawful activity, the group argues, not only undermines legitimate rent-a-cab operators but also poses a grave threat to public safety on Goa's roads.

"Due to the illegal use, the accident was caused, resulting in loss of life and significant damage," the complaint stated, urging police to take strict legal action against the vehicle owners. The association emphasized that such incidents erode trust in the regulated transport sector and jeopardize tourist safety.

Association President Highlights Systemic Issues

Nitesh Chodankar, president of the All Goa Rent-A-Cab Owners' Association, provided further insights into the case. He revealed that the Mahindra Thar involved in the fatal crash was not a registered rent-a-car but was operating as a taxi, indicating a clear violation of licensing norms. Chodankar contrasted this with licensed rental operators, who he claims are rarely involved in accidents due to stringent safety protocols.

"Licensed rental cars are seldom involved in accidents because operators actively caution customers against drinking and negligent driving," Chodankar explained. He also alleged widespread misuse of faulty number plates, where taxis are falsely presented as rental cars to bypass regulations, creating a dangerous loophole in the system.

Demand for Regulatory Crackdown

With the police investigation currently underway, the association has spotlighted the prevalence of unlicensed rental operators in Goa. It is calling on authorities to verify all credentials of vehicles in the rental category, ensuring strict adherence to transport laws. The group's memorandum stresses the need for:

  • Immediate verification of registration and permit status for all rental vehicles.
  • Legal action against owners of illegally operated cars.
  • Enhanced monitoring to prevent misuse of number plates and licensing.
  • Public awareness campaigns on the risks of using unlicensed rental services.

This incident has reignited debates over road safety and regulatory enforcement in Goa, a prime tourist destination. The association's complaint underscores the urgent need for tighter controls to prevent similar tragedies, as the state balances tourism growth with passenger security. The outcome of the police probe could set a precedent for future enforcement actions in the region's transport sector.
