In a shocking incident that has sent ripples through the rural community, a middle-aged couple was found brutally murdered in their agricultural field in Gaya district. The grim discovery was made on Friday morning in Chanpi village, falling under the jurisdiction of the Sherghati police station.
Victims Identified as Local Panchayat Member and Husband
The deceased have been identified as Keshari Devi, 50, a member of ward number 1 of Chanpi panchayat, and her husband, Pradeep Yadav, 55. According to preliminary information from the police, the couple had stayed overnight in a small hut on their farm to guard recently harvested crops. It was there that the assailants struck, using a sharp-edged weapon to slit their throats while they were asleep.
Son Discovers the Grisly Scene
The crime came to light when the couple's son, Ravi Kumar, grew concerned after his repeated phone calls to his parents went unanswered. He subsequently went to the farmland, where he was met with the horrific sight of his parents lying dead. The local police were immediately alerted. The bodies were later recovered and sent to the Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College and Hospital for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause and time of death.
Police Probe Multiple Angles Including Land Dispute
Senior police officials, including City SP Ramanand Kumar Kaushal and ASP Shailendra Singh, swiftly arrived at the crime scene to oversee the investigation. The Sherghati police station team has been directed to explore all possible motives. Sherghati sub-divisional police officer-cum-ASP Shailendra Singh stated that the investigation is being conducted from various angles, with a primary focus on land disputes, old enmity, and potential political rivalry.
Family members of the victims have corroborated the land dispute theory, telling investigators that there had been ongoing tensions related to the very farmland where the couple was killed. To aid the investigation, technical teams, including the dog squad and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), have been deployed to the site to gather crucial evidence.
While no arrests had been made until Friday evening, ASP Shailendra Singh expressed confidence, asserting that the criminals would be apprehended soon. The police are combing through local leads and evidence to piece together the sequence of events that led to this brutal double murder.
