Madurai Court Delivers Life Sentences in 2016 Caste-Based Murder Case
The third additional district and sessions (PCR) court in Madurai has delivered a landmark verdict, convicting and imposing life sentences on five individuals for the brutal 2016 murder of a man from the Scheduled Caste community. The conviction stems from a case where the victim, Chinna Karuppiah, was killed after he filed a complaint against a former panchayat president for allegedly encroaching on government land.
Background of the Land Dispute and Murder
Chinna Karuppiah, a 45-year-old resident of Odaipatti village in Madurai district, had submitted a representation to the Madurai district collector in 2015. In his complaint, Karuppiah alleged that M Sampathkumar, the former president of the Thindiyoor village panchayat, had illegally encroached upon approximately 1.20 acres of government poramboke land. This act of whistleblowing triggered a deadly conspiracy against him.
According to prosecution details, Sampathkumar, along with his brothers M Seshan and M Paramasivam, plotted to murder Karuppiah in retaliation. On January 21, 2016, when Karuppiah was traveling on his two-wheeler, the group, including accomplices M Sekar, R Ramkumar, and G Boominathan, intercepted him. They threw a stone at his vehicle, causing him to fall. Subsequently, they abused him using his caste name and stabbed him multiple times with knives before fleeing the scene. Karuppiah sustained grievous injuries and died on the spot.
Legal Proceedings and Court Verdict
Following the murder, Karuppiah's wife filed a complaint, leading the Karuppayurani police to register a case and arrest six accused individuals. The charges included murder under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and provisions of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. After a thorough investigation, police submitted a final report to the trial court. Notably, one of the accused, Seshan, died during the pendency of the trial.
On Wednesday, Judge K Dhamodharan of the Madurai court convicted Sampathkumar, Paramasivam, Sekar, Ramkumar, and Boominathan for the murder. The court sentenced all five to undergo life imprisonment, emphasizing the gravity of the crime, which involved caste-based violence and retaliation over a land dispute.
