Two days after a woman was allegedly gang-raped between Belaganj and Neyamatpur stations on the Gaya–Patna railway line, police on Sunday arrested five suspects in connection with the crime.
Arrests Made After Thorough Investigation
Senior Superintendent of Police Sushil Kumar stated, “A special team under the supervision of City SP Kota Kiran Kumar was constituted. The police team, headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) Ravi Prakash Singh, conducted a thorough investigation and arrested five accused: Ankit Kumar, Rahul Kumar, Abhishek Kumar, and Amrendra Kumar, all residents of the Belaganj police station area, and Upendra Kumar of Jehanabad Sadar police station. Police will soon submit a chargesheet in the case and pray before the court for a speedy trial to ensure that the guilty are punished and the victim gets justice.”
Earlier, police had detained ten suspects for questioning as part of the investigation. They also recorded the victim’s statement to understand the sequence of events.
Details of the Incident
According to preliminary findings, the victim, a resident of Jehanabad district, was traveling on the Patna–Gaya MEMU passenger train to her maternal village in Belaganj on Friday evening. She had boarded the train at Jehanabad station. Investigators suspect the train was brought to a halt after the emergency chain was pulled between Belaganj and Neyamatpur stations at around 8 pm.
When the woman got off the train, thinking her station had arrived, a group of youths traveling in the same coach also alighted. The accused allegedly dragged her to an isolated spot and assaulted her before fleeing. After the incident, the victim managed to reach the police on Friday night and lodged a complaint.
A team from Belaganj police station immediately reached the spot and took her for a medical examination. Forensic experts were also called in to collect evidence. An FIR was registered at Belaganj police station on Saturday.
Legal Proceedings and Next Steps
Police have assured that the investigation is being conducted diligently, and the chargesheet will be filed soon. They have also requested the court to expedite the trial to ensure justice for the victim.
