A shocking incident of domestic violence has rocked Ovarasanpettai village in Chengalpet, where a father allegedly beat his own son to death using an iron rod. The fatal assault was the culmination of frequent and bitter quarrels stemming from the cancellation of the son's wedding.
A Broken Engagement Leads to Despair and Conflict
According to police, the accused, Johnson, 54, worked as a driver. His son, Wesley, 28, was employed as a food delivery executive for a private company. The family had been actively preparing for Wesley's marriage and had recently identified a prospective bride.
The process had advanced to the point where Wesley, accompanied by his parents, visited the bride's house to present a gold ring as part of the engagement ceremony. However, the hopes of the family were shattered when the bride's family later communicated that she was not interested in proceeding with the marriage, leading to the engagement being called off.
This rejection reportedly plunged Wesley into a deep depression. He began consuming alcohol frequently and, while under its influence, would often pick fights at home. He regularly abused his parents, blaming them for not being able to persuade the bride's family to reconsider their decision.
The Fatal Night of Violence
The situation reached a tragic climax on Saturday night. A heated argument erupted between father and son, which quickly escalated into physical violence. During the altercation, both men attacked each other, with reports indicating an iron rod and a wooden stick were used as weapons.
At a critical moment, Johnson managed to snatch the iron rod from Wesley and struck him forcefully on the head. The blow proved to be fatal. Wesley collapsed on the spot, bleeding profusely from his head, and died from the injuries.
Police Action and Aftermath
Upon receiving information about the violent incident, personnel from the Chengalpet police station rushed to the scene. The police have registered a case and recovered the body. The remains were sent to the Chengalpattu Government Hospital for a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
The authorities have booked Johnson for murder and he has been remanded to judicial custody. The case highlights a devastating breakdown in familial relations, triggered by societal pressure and the emotional fallout from a failed marriage alliance.
