Tragic Bus Accident Claims Eight Lives in Fatehgarh Sahib District

A devastating bus accident near Fatehgarh Sahib has resulted in the deaths of eight individuals and left more than twenty-two others injured. The incident occurred late on Tuesday night as pilgrims were returning from Baisakhi celebrations at Anandpur Sahib.

Details of the Fatal Crash

The bus overturned near Himmatpura village on the Morinda–Chunni road, approximately three to four kilometers from the victims' intended destination of Main Majra village. According to ASI Balveer Singh of the Bassi Pathana police station, the deceased included both the driver and the village granthi, Iqbal Singh, who was transporting devotees back to their local gurdwara.

Police officials have clarified that the vehicle did not collide with an electric pole, dispelling earlier speculation about possible electrocution. Authorities are currently examining the mechanical condition of the bus to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Local Response and Rescue Efforts

Local villagers were the first to arrive at the scene and played a crucial role in rescuing trapped passengers before emergency services could reach the location. Their prompt action likely prevented further casualties and provided immediate assistance to those injured.

Residents of the area have alleged that potholes on the road may have caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, though this claim remains under investigation by police authorities who have initiated a formal inquiry into the incident.

Medical Response and Treatment

Of the more than twenty-two injured passengers, twelve with critical conditions were referred to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) in Chandigarh for specialized treatment. The remaining injured individuals are receiving medical care at hospitals in Morinda and Fatehgarh Sahib.

The tragedy has cast a shadow over what should have been a joyous return from Baisakhi celebrations, one of the most significant festivals in Sikh tradition commemorating the formation of the Khalsa.

Ongoing Investigation

Police continue to investigate all aspects of the accident, including road conditions, vehicle maintenance, and driver factors. The community mourns the loss of life while authorities work to determine precise causes and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
