The Coimbatore district police force is in mourning following the death of a valued former member of their team – Alka, a 14-year-old explosive sniffer dog. The veteran Labrador, who served with distinction for nearly a decade, passed away due to age-related health complications on Friday night.
A Distinguished Career in Bomb Detection
Alka's journey with the Coimbatore police began in December 2013, when he was formally attached to the elite Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS). Trained as a specialist in sniffing out explosives, the male Labrador quickly became an indispensable asset. Over his nine-year tenure, Alka played a crucial role in aiding the district police in numerous sensitive cases, using his keen senses to ensure public safety and security.
Retirement and Final Months
After a commendable and dedicated service, Alka officially retired from active duty in July 2022. His retirement marked the end of a significant chapter for the BDDS team, who had worked alongside him for years. In his well-earned retirement, Alka enjoyed a quieter life, though in his final months, he battled health issues linked to his advanced age. He had been suffering from an age-related medical ailment for the last couple of months before his peaceful passing.
A Hero's Farewell
True to the tradition of honouring service members, the Coimbatore police ensured Alka received a farewell befitting his contributions. Alka's body was buried with full police honours at the BDDS campus located in Sulur. This solemn ceremony underscored the deep respect and gratitude the police force held for their four-legged colleague, recognising his service as equal to that of any human officer.
