Coimbatore: A 69-year-old woman was found murdered in her apartment near Ramanathapuram in Coimbatore on Sunday morning. Preliminary investigations suggest it is a case of murder for gain, according to police.
Victim Identified as Gomathi
The victim, Gomathi, was the widow of Thangaraj, a retired sub-registrar who passed away ten years ago. She lived alone at Ramani's Apartments. Her son and daughter reside abroad. The crime came to light when her daughter Rathika arrived from London on Sunday to assist her mother with a scheduled eye surgery. Upon entering the flat, she discovered her mother dead in the hall.
Police Investigation Underway
Rathika alerted the Ramanathapuram police, who secured the scene and sent the body to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital for postmortem. Residents and security guards reported last seeing Gomathi on Saturday evening.
Evidence of Strangulation and Theft
“Marks on Gomathi’s neck indicated she was strangled. Her daughter noted that a gold chain, a pair of bangles, and earrings worn by the deceased are missing. Her mobile phone has also been stolen,” said a senior police officer. Authorities are examining CCTV footage from the apartment complex and nearby roads to identify suspicious movement. Forensic experts traced the missing phone’s signal to Sungam, where it was last active on Saturday evening.
A case has been registered, and special teams have been formed to trace the suspects.
