ED Seizes Rs 5.39 Crore in Chhattisgarh Liquor Scam Raids

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has seized cash and gold valued at approximately Rs 5.39 crore during searches conducted at 13 locations across Raipur, Durg-Bhilai, and Bilaspur in connection with the alleged Chhattisgarh liquor scam. The searches were carried out by the ED's Raipur zonal office on April 30 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Details of the Searches and Seizures

The raids targeted premises linked to liquor traders, chartered accountants, businesspersons, and corporate entities suspected of handling or concealing proceeds of crime. According to the ED, the seizures included Rs 53 lakh in cash and gold jewellery and bullion weighing approximately 3.234 kg, valued at around Rs 4.86 crore. Additionally, incriminating documents and digital devices were recovered and are being analyzed for further evidence.

Background of the Money Laundering Probe

The money-laundering investigation is based on First Information Reports (FIRs) registered by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) and Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Raipur. The ED has alleged an organized conspiracy involving political executives, senior bureaucrats, liquor distillers, and their associates. The conspiracy is said to involve illegal commissions in the procurement, licensing, and sale of liquor between 2019 and 2022.

Estimated Proceeds of Crime and Arrests

The proceeds of crime have been estimated at around Rs 2,883 crore, as per the chargesheets filed by the EOW and ACB. So far, the ED has arrested nine persons and filed six prosecution complaints naming 81 accused individuals and entities. Properties worth approximately Rs 380 crore have been attached in connection with the case.

The investigation continues as authorities analyze the recovered documents and digital evidence to uncover the full extent of the scam and identify additional beneficiaries.
