In a shocking display of misconduct that left the police force and public in disbelief, a drunken sub-inspector in Lucknow turned a busy city crossing into a scene of chaos, allegedly forgetting all traffic rules and police protocol. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the New Year, saw the officer drag a colleague on his car's bonnet and later lecture senior officers who arrived at the scene.
Midnight Mayhem at Busy Crossing
The drama unfolded around 1 am on Thursday at one of Lucknow's busiest intersections. Sub-Inspector Ashutosh Tripathi, who was on duty managing the New Year rush from the traffic control room, attempted to stop a speeding car coming from the direction of the governor's residence. Instead of complying, the driver allegedly accelerated, narrowly missing several policemen and briefly dragging Ashutosh Tripathi onto the vehicle's bonnet in the ensuing chaos.
A Shocking Revelation and Further Misconduct
When the car was finally brought to a halt, the driver stepped out. He was identified as Sub-Inspector Saumya Jaiswal, who is posted at the Barabanki police lines. Witnesses reported that Jaiswal was unsteady on his feet but possessed enough misplaced confidence to begin lecturing the on-duty policemen at the scene. The situation took an even more surreal turn when Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Kamlesh Dixit arrived. The senior officer was reportedly greeted with further misbehaviour from the inebriated Jaiswal.
Detention and Discovery of Alcohol
Police promptly detained Jaiswal and took him to the Hazratganj kotwali. Even in custody, he reportedly displayed stubbornness, initially refusing to hand over his car keys. Once the vehicle was opened, authorities made a damning discovery: five to six liquor bottles were found inside. A subsequent medical examination confirmed alcohol consumption. Based on this, Jaiswal was officially challaned for drunk driving.
In a statement to the Times of India, Superintendent of Police, Barabanki, Arpit Vijayvargiya, revealed that Jaiswal was currently on leave, having cited his wife's sickness as the reason. The entire incident was captured on video and has since gone viral on social media, sparking widespread discussion about discipline within the police force.
